Outdoor Bonsai
The majority of these trees should be kept outdoors and only brought indoors for short periods of time. Keep in a sheltered position away from strong winds, hard frost and strong sun. Many, like the maples are deciduous, dropping their leaves in winter, and need the change of seasons to grow according to their nature. Others like the pines and junipers are evergreen throughout the year, and need good light and cool temperatures to thrive.
Japanese Red Mountain Maple/ Acer Palmatum Deshojo
The most traditional and most loved of Japanese bonsai. Deciduous, hardy with bright red foliage in spring fading to green in summer and returning to bright red before leaf fall. These need a sheltered spot away from strong winds and frost. Perfect for patios and small gardens. Perfect specious for bonsai cultivation.
Japanese White Pine. Pinus Parviflora.
Many of the very ancient bonsai trees seen in Japan, are of this species. This specimens can be seen growing around carved and bleached dead wood, to create a magnificent, aged and rugged look. Foliage pads can be easily trailed to develop gentle curves and a cloud-like silhouette. Beautiful classic bonsai subject that has been cultivated for centuaries in Japan. Coniferious tree with tiny needle shaped, blue/green foliage. Easy to cultivate as bonsai. Hardy, and can be kept in full sun and fairly exposed positions, but water well in summer. Put indoors in a cool position during prolonged periods of rain or wind. It does nor like to get too wet for too long.

Chinese Juniper. Juniperus Sergentii.
This hardy evergreen shrub has been grow as bonsai in Japan and China for hundreds of years. It is easy to wire and shape and lends itself to all bonsai styles. It is slow growing with a low compact shape and reddish, shaggy trunk. Many of the very ancient bonsai trees seen in Japan, are of this species. This specimens can be seen growing around carved and bleached dead wood, to create a magnificent, aged and rugged look.Foliage pads can be easily trailed to develop gentle curves and a cloud-like silhouette. Hardy, and can be kept in exposed positions ie. balconies etc.

Crab Apple /Malus Domestica/ Halliana
These lovely deciduous trees make charming bonsai with their spring blossom and cherry-like autumn fruit. Likes full light and sun throughout the year and protect from wind and heavy rain when blossoming in the spring,and some frost protection is need in winter. Fertilise every week in spring and summer before fruits develop. Lots of water needed in summer and especially during fruiting season.
Azalea /Rhododendron
Native of Japan and one of the most spectacular of all flowering bonsai. This evergreen bonsai flowers for several weeks in May/ June with brilliant pink blossoms. Small leafed and easily shaped. Use rain water for watering as much as possible. Protect from frost in winter and heavy rain when flowering.
European Olive / Olea Europa
Suitable for sunny positions indoor or outdoor, the European Olive make one of the loveliest trees as bonsai. These trees develop wonderful thick gnarled trunks and can live many years. Tiny shiny, green, waxy leaves throughout the year, with fruit and flower possible as it matures. Easy to care for and is tolerant of cool or warm condition once it received good light. Will tolerate strong sun if kept watered well.. Minimum twmperatures outdoor 7degrees so take indoors in winter.

Japanese Larch /Larix Leptolepis Dawn Redwood / Sequoia .
Both the Larch and Redwood although they are conifers, are also deciduous. Hardy, and can take more exposed area like balconies.These trees only be kept indoors for short periods of time, although the Holly can be kept indoors in winter in a cool area.
